Patients report an inability to enjoy usual activities, travel becomes difficult or impossible. Many report insomnia, weight changes, and some even develop anxiety or panic attacks7 and suffer from low self esteem. A few have actually attempted suicide due to the debilitating nature of their condition.8

A 1995 estimate for the USA puts the direct cost of community-acquired UTIs at $659 million and the indirect cost, through lost productivity, at $936 million.3
